![]() But you can’t teach someone to be a pacemaker, or teach someone how to steal the vibe in a room, or actually, like, energize it, or calm it down or control it. But, just like the same thing with DJ technology, there might be technology that makes it so now you can blend two records together seamlessly, without having to do anything, or how to have done that with vinyl. ![]() JY: And just to add on that: the way Curt breaks it down makes it way easier for people to make music, pop music or whatever. I’m looking forward to the next five years and how much easier it’ll be, because at the end of the day, I think it’ll bring it down to which musician has the best taste. Even into mixing and mastering now, there are so many tools that can just instantly mix and master your song. But now you can just do it by just bashing on some keys almost. There’s other software that makes it so you can play chords with just one finger, or crazy chord progressions that would take years of music theory to learn. As for creating music, there’s software that helps you detect keys, like what key songs are in. ![]() That right there is crazy, because before, we even worked on stuff in our first incarnation of Flosstradamus as DJs, and we had to actually physically mail CDs over night, and get stems and stuff that way, and now it’s just so much easier to do it. Even on that end of things, being able to send a session back and forth over the internet, through Dropbox or things like that. As far as a learning curve with the software, like I said it was pretty easy, but I had a teacher around me pretty much.ĬTNow: These days, how quickly does the technology change to the point where you feel it’s actually impacting the music?Ĭurt Cameruci: There are so many things now, even within the past few years, even the way that Josh and I can work, because I live in New York and Josh lives in Chicago. But it took us a good while, like maybe six or seven years into our career before we started releasing a lot of original music. But yeah, you’re totally right, the way that we started was just by making - at the time they were called mashups, just layering two or three songs over each other, maybe some additional drums here and there, maybe some edits. Between Curt and YouTube, that’s how we kind of got to the point where we are now, just to figure out how to make music, and so I could figure out how to make beats and get my ideas out there, and send them to Curt and he can work on them too. But also, Curt is kind of a treasure trove of information when it comes to DAWs, the software that you use to produce music … so I had plenty of questions on how to figure out what I was doing. And so as a duo, it’s always awesome to have someone to bounce ideas off of. But Curt has been producing since he was young. About 2011 was really when I started to really sit down and try and learn how to make music. ![]() Josh Young: For me, I hadn’t produced ever until very, very recently. Their music has appeared on Fool’s Gold, Green Label Sound and Mad Decent new tracks show up occasionally on their Soundcloud page, while fans (dubbed HDYBOYZ and HDYGIRLZ - or, collectively, HDYNATION) play, replay, tag, share, dissect, emulate and possibly remix. Trap, meanwhile, is a beat-centered subgenre of EDM that deals in greater transparency, lighter sounds and, compared with the overdriven thrum of dubstep, a somewhat toned-down bro-ishness.Ĭhicago duo Flosstradamus - J2K (Josh Young) and Autobot (Curt Cameruci) - are trap pioneers in eight years, they went from DJing small shows to collaborating with Waka Flocka Flame and performing at Lollapalooza. And while hugely popular, EDM is polarizing fans, mostly young ones, recognize the creativity (and love to dance), while rock-centered listeners say it’s just pressing a button on a laptop (not true). ![]() Producers talk about “stems,” or individual components of a mix made available separately, for remixing one song into something (partly) new. Repurposing isn’t stealing remixing is part of the culture. Electronic dance music involves quantifiable limbs and components - short intros, build-ups, drops, breakdowns - assembled, in various configurations, into three- or four-minute chunks that reach fans through Soundcloud or other Internet means. ![]()
